Coaching vs. Counseling
Coaching vs. Counseling
Which one is right for you? How do you know?
Counseling and coaching are not the same thing however, there is overlap. It can be confusing to know what the differences are to know which is right for you.
Counseling is more about healing and problem solving. It may include a reflective element to understand how the past is showing up in the present. Counseling may include identifying and solving specific problems. These problems may be issues that you find are coming up often and limit you from moving forward. Counseling can often include spending time unearthing how your upbringing, influences of family dynamics or long-held assumptions influence your life today. Counseling may involve moving through areas where you feel stuck so you can move forward in your life.
Coaching is more forward looking. It is about deepened learning that leads to creating and taking action. You know what you want and you have not been able to figure out how to get there. Coaching helps you get clear about what you want and opens up what is blocking you from getting there. It is a collaborative process that leads to setting goals and developing actions. There is an element of self discovery that includes values clarity, prioritizing and shedding limiting beliefs that can take us farther than where we can take ourselves.
